Gainesville Explorer: Gainesville Rock Gym
*Go to this blog’s new address*
I shot and edited another video for The Alligator today. The videos I will be doing almost weekly are part of a series called “Gainesville Explorer.”
The idea is to go somewhere Gainesvillish every week and either make a video or a slideshow about the place. Although I’ve done the last two videos, the first place The Alligator did was Paynes Prairie. Jeremiah Stanley, an Alligator photographer, did an awesome job on an audio slideshow.
It’s a good way to promote local business in Gainesville as well as give students and others something to do other than go out to clubs and bars.
The video I just finished today is of the Gainesville Rock Gym. It’s a pretty cool place. The people are friendly, and there is plenty to do there. I’m particularly fond of this video because I like how it came out.
When the video is made live on the Alligator Web site, I will post a link. I also wanted to give my kudos to the lovely lady who is writing all the briefs for the Gainesville Explorer series, Lidia Dinkova.
The fruits of my labor
After much work, editing and re-editing, here are a couple of my videos on the Alligator web site.
Work for The Alligator today
I took video of a MLK Day parade for The Alligator. This post is short and sweet because I had a really long day. Remember how nature can be tempermental? So can technology. More on that tomorrow…maybe.
iMovie sucks.
Here is my video:
Tennis…+ Violence..?

Police used pepper spray on a crowd at the Australian Open yesterday. Apparently a few guys in a crowd started screaming racial slurs. The umpire of the tennis match asked the men to stop. When they didn’t, the police did their thing.
Not to condone what the men were doing, but that’s a pretty harsh punishment, not to mention they weren’t exactly helping the greater good when a few extra people, including two children, had to be treated in a hospital after inhaling the spray.
I found this story while doing some research for a blog post. I was looking to do a post on some of the online media in the Australian newspapers. I figured I could find some projects like the ones the New York Times did when the U.S. Open rolled into town, but alas, I found nothing. I’ll keep my eyes peeled though.
There are some nice stories coming out of the Australian Open though:
- Lindsay Davenport looks to win a Grand Slam seven months after giving birth (New York Times)
- Australian Open gets a new surface (New York Times)
Portfolio redesign done; Web content page up
I started this project a long time ago. But I finally finished redesigning my portfolio. The final touch was putting up a page with some of my Web content, which includes some of my Flash and CSS projects.

There are still a few things I’d like to do, but they are minimal:
- Make a lightbox for my photojournalism page, though I do like the absolutely positioned layout I made for my favorite photos.
- Put in a video page. For now, all my videos are on YouTube.
- Move my page over from the University of Florida Web servers to a new Web host along with a new domain name. Right now using UF hosting I have only 20 mb of space and an unreliable server.
- And of course, I will eventually put this blog on there.
What do you think?
