Gainesville Explorer: Gainesville Rock Gym

I shot and edited another video for The Alligator today. The videos I will be doing almost weekly are part of a series called “Gainesville Explorer.”
The idea is to go somewhere Gainesvillish every week and either make a video or a slideshow about the place. Although I’ve done the last two videos, the first place The Alligator did was Paynes Prairie. Jeremiah Stanley, an Alligator photographer, did an awesome job on an audio slideshow.
It’s a good way to promote local business in Gainesville as well as give students and others something to do other than go out to clubs and bars.
The video I just finished today is of the Gainesville Rock Gym. It’s a pretty cool place. The people are friendly, and there is plenty to do there. I’m particularly fond of this video because I like how it came out.
When the video is made live on the Alligator Web site, I will post a link. I also wanted to give my kudos to the lovely lady who is writing all the briefs for the Gainesville Explorer series, Lidia Dinkova.
The fruits of my labor
After much work, editing and re-editing, here are a couple of my videos on the Alligator web site.
How are we percieved?
As a journalist, I often wonder how people of my profession are perceived. I got a glimpse into that yesterday:
Work for The Alligator today
I took video of a MLK Day parade for The Alligator. This post is short and sweet because I had a really long day. Remember how nature can be tempermental? So can technology. More on that tomorrow…maybe.
iMovie sucks.
Here is my video:
Nature is tempermental and unreliable
This blog has a new location!
I went out today to shoot some video for The Independent Florida Alligator. Megan Taylor asked me recently to be a video stringer for the paper. She is The Alligator’s managing editor of online media.
Today’s video was supposed to be about the University of Florida’s bat house. Apparently thousands of bats fly out of this bat house every night. Well, not every night. I guess they don’t come out when it is too cold. It was in the thirties while I was out there, and it was way too cold for me, let alone these tiny, flying rodents. The bats had the right idea, but that didn’t help my cause.
The point is, I didn’t get the video because the bats didn’t feel like coming out. Thankfully, I have a chance to go out tomorrow evening and give it another go, but I won’t have the video done and edited until late.
Lessons and observations for today:
- Always have a tripod when shooting video, especially when it is cold. You can’t keep the camera still if you’re shivering.
- Things of nature are unreliable. Give yourself as much time as you can.
- Keep your eyes peeled. I noticed an alligator by the bat house and got some pretty cool video from it.
